identical twins: Twins developing from a single fertilized ovum that splits into two clusters of cells during its early development.

ileostomy: An artificial opening from the intestine. imperforate hymen Unusually thick hymen completely covering the entrance to the vagina.

implantation: Embedding of the blastocyst in the uterus seven or eight days after conception.

incest: Sexual intercourse between persons so closely related that they are forbidden by law to marry.

incubation period: The period of time between exposure to an infectious disease and the appearance of its symptoms.

induced abortion: Abortion intentionally brought on through the use of drugs or instruments.

infanticide: The killing of an infant.

infatuation: An attraction based on similarity to an idealized partner.

inhibin: A protein that may be a hormone and that may inhibit secretion of the follicle-stimulating hormone from the pituitary gland.

inhibited female orgasm: See orgasmic dysfunction. inhibited male orgasm See retarded ejaculation.

nhibited sexual excitement: See erectile dysfunction. insecurity: Lacking self-confidence or self-assurance.

in situ: In its natural or original position; localized.

instillation: Introduction of a liquid into a cavity; instillation of saline or prostaglandins sometimes used to induce abortion during the second trimester.

interstitial (Leydig) cells: The testosterone-secreting cells located between the seminiferous tubules of the testes.

interstitial cell-stimulating hormone (ICSH): Pituitary hormone that stimulates the interstitial cells of the testes to secrete testosterone.

intimacy: A state of warm friendship and the sharing of innermost feelings and emotions; develops through long association.

intrapsychic: From within a person’s own mind.

intrauterine device: A plastic birth control device that is placed inside the uterus and left there; believed to interfere with implantation of the fertilized ovum.

in vitro fertilization: The fertilization of a human ovum by a sperm outside the body within a glass container.
