Ellis, Havelock: A British psychologist (1859—1939) who was among the first to publish data gathered through sexual surveys and who advocated increased social acceptance of sexuality. embryo: The unborn child during the first eight weeks of development after conception. emission: Discharge of seminal fluid from the fluid-producing glands of the reproductive system. emotional isolation: Lacking intimate relationships; having no emotional support system. endocrine glands: Body glands that secrete hormones into the blood or lymph. endometrial aspiration: Removal of the uterine lining through the use of a suction instrument called an aspirator; sometimes used for menstrual extraction. endometriosis: Growth of endometrial tissue outside of the uterus, such as over the ovaries and fallopian tubes. endometrium: The mucous membrane of the uterus; thickness and structure varies with the phases of the menstrual cycle. epididymis: The tightly coiled, cordlike structure along the posterior border of the testis; stores sperm. episiotomy: Surgical incision of the perineum for delivery of a baby. erectile dysfunction: The inability to have or to maintain penile erection of sufficient firmness for coitus; also known as inhibited sexual excitement. erectile tissue Tissue that is capable of erection. erection: The condition of being made rigid and elevated. erogenous zones: Areas of the body that are especially sensitive to sexual stimulation. erotica: The graphic depiction of nudes in a manner that is a mutually pleasurable expression between people and not a debasing of the individual. erotic sensations: Those sensory perceptions that are sexually gratifying. erythroblastosis fetalis: Destruction of fetal red blood cells by antibodies crossing the placenta from an Rh negative mother to her Rh positive fetus. estrogens: A group of hormones that promote development of the female reproductive tract and female bodily characteristics. euphoria: An exaggerated feeling of well-being. excitement phase: The first phase of the sexual response cycle in which engorgement of the sexual organs and an increase in muscle tension, heart rate, and blood pressure occur. exhibitionism: Deriving sexual gratification from repeatedly exposing the genitals to unsuspecting and unconsenting strangers. experimental research: Research in which something such as human behavior is studied under carefully controlled conditions in order to learn the effects of a specific variable factor. |
