The service factor is a rating that indicates how much a motor can be safely over-loaded. For instance, a motor that has an SF of 1.15 can be safely overloaded by 15%. That is, if the motor is rated for 1 hp, it can actually carry 1.15 hp safely. To determine the overload capability of a motor, multiply the rated horsepower by the service factor. The motor is capable of being overloaded because it's designed with ways of dissipating large amounts of heat.
