Fixed-Shelf Utility Case (Building Cases)

HOME | Glossary | Books

Not only does this case have a more finished appearance than the open utility shelves, but it is constructed so that it is possible to enclose the shelf space, giving you the opportunity to make this a cabinet.

The simplest way to enclose one or more of the shelves is to install sliding doors. You should realize that since this design does not include a face frame, it is unsuitable to hang large, hinged doors.

Dimensions for the unit shown here are 36 inches tall by 36 inches wide by 11¼ inches deep, but as with all of the projects in this section, you can adjust the size according to your own needs. In addition to basic tools (including a carpenter’s square), a router, table saw, or radial arm saw is highly recommended for cutting rabbets and dadoes.

1. From 1 by 12 board stock, cut 1 lop and 2 shelves at 35¼ inches and 2 sides at 36 inches. From a 1 by 4 board, cut a kickplate at 34½-inches. From ¼-inch plywood, cut a panel for the back measuring 35¼ inches by 35 inches.

2. Cut a rabbet and dadoes in each side piece, making each cut ¾ inch deep and ¾-inch wide. Position bottom dado 3½-inches up from bottom of each board so that kickplate will later fit into place. Make dadoes for center shelf at a suitable height.

3. Cut rabbets for plywood back panel at inside back edge of each side panel. These rabbets are all ¼ inch deep (to match ¼-inch-thick ply wood) and /8 inch wide. Cut another rabbet along bottom back edge of top piece of case.

4. Rip-cut ¼ inch from back edge of center and bottom shelves to provide clearance for plywood back.

5. Using glue and 4d finishing nails, assemble the 5 pieces of 1 by 12 in the configuration shown. Nail joints to secure them, and be sure to square the case up before the glue has set. 6. When glue has set (let it sit over night), glue and nail in back panel and kickplate.

7. Set and fill nail holes and any cracks, sand case, and apply the finish of your choice.
