Adding Features: Slide-, TV-, Computer-Monitor Projector Cabinet

HOME | Glossary | Books

If your great slide collection remains unseen because of the trouble involved in setting up the projector consider building this projector cabinet. Guests might even appreciate your collection more if they frequently see a few slides at a time, rather than a large quantity all at once.

This project involves outfitting a basic corner cabinet to accommodate a circular-tray projector, a roll-up screen, and trays of slides.

In this triangular cabinet two of the sides are 27½-inches wide; the third (the front) is 39 inches. This results in a rather wide cabinet with shelves deep enough to hold a projector. However, the outer corners are chamfered (beveled), and because the cabinet is in a corner, it does not appear too large. The 72-inch height provides ample storage space and allows the projector to be placed high enough to miss the heads of seated viewers.

The basic corner cabinet, as shown, can be built from 2 sheets of plywood and 2 by 4s and 1 by 2s. To outfit the cabinet for the projector, you will need an additional sheet of plywood for the shelves and 1 by 2s to support them. Metal standards and shelf clips allow shelves to be adjusted and eliminate need for cleats.

As seen in the illustration, shelves are cut away to make a niche for storing the roll-up screen. By allowing 12 inches between shelves, each can store 6 tray boxes on end. Drill a 1¼-inch hole in an unobtrusive place through which to thread power cord.
